Growing Green Onions on the Windowsill

Okay! I came across this easy to follow tutorial for repurposing a 2 liter bottle for use as a green onion planter. It looks like a money saving way to have a steady supply of green onion tops for all the tasty Whole30 meals I’ll be cooking. The seed order is going in this week, so I’d like to try growing some onions from seed and planting them this way when the shoots are strong. Has anyone done this?

  1. By coincidence, the wife just started doing this, too- three days and the bulbs are sending out roots. We also started cloning Romaine lettuce & celery this way. It takes 3-6 weeks of growth to get harvestable leaves. Just take a head and saw off the stump about 3 inches from the bottom- best to leave a little green showing on the stump. Stand the stump in water about 1/2 in. deep. As it grows, you can start using home made hydroponic fluid: 1 tsp Epsom salts, 2 tsp plant food (like Miracle Grow, etc) in 1 gal water.
